Summary

After analyzing the job openings in NYC from 2011 to 2019, we found that the number of jobs increased 3 folds between 2018 and 2019. Specifically, we dived deeper to understand the different skillsets and the categories that have maximum opportunities and what you should be looking for to land your next NYC job. 2019 was a great year for Job seekers whether you are a new graduate or somebody who has been in the market for a long time.

In 2019, 5389 new jobs were posted, which were 307% more than the jobs posted in 2018. To understand this better, we took a closer look at when these jobs were posted.

 

The plot shows that the maximum jobs were posted between October and November and it is good news for people looking for opportunities in Fall as it provides a boost in the job search. On contrary, there was slow growth in the number of jobs posted between Jan and April

The top 5 fastest growing job categories in NYC

We analyzed the average salaries these jobs attract and found that tech jobs have the highest average of $105,442. With augmented reality and AI taking over, it is no surprise that these jobs have such high salary bracket. This high-skilled job had 383 positions available for job seekers. For Job seekers in Trades building operations had an average salary of $33,220, the category stands second in the number of positions offered.

The highest paying jobs were Communication & intergovernmental affairs, engineering, legal affairs and technology. However, there were only 1414 positions available, with the highest of 603 positions for engineers.


Conclusion

While there are many rising opportunities to make a decent living in NYC, there is a wide salary gap between job seekers with graduate degrees and for job seekers in the trades. The city’s average salary is within the range from $58,617 to $83,863.
